No fakt.. Choć i tak dużo bardziej żenujące jest pisanie o człowieku, który miał tak ogromny wkład w rozwój współczesnej muzyki (nie tylko niezależnego rocka), że jest przedziwnym wytworem z NY i miał jakiś tam imitatorów.

Przesłuchałem sobie dwie nowsze płyty Lou Reeda, których wcześniej nie znałem: Magic and Loss (1992) i Ecstasy (2000).

Polecam obydwie. Pierwsza jest bardziej klimatyczna i chyba najbardziej sentymentalna w dyskografii,

druga - bardziej urozmaicona. Nie podoba mi się jedynie 18-minutowy, męczący "kawałek" (umieszczony nie wiedzieć czemu)

z przesterowaną gitarą a'la Crazy Horse Neila Younga i monotonnym wokalem i linią melodyczną.

I remember buying Velvet Underground's 'White

Heat, White Light' album around 1968 and thinking

how disturbing and dark it was. It took me a

while to appreciate how much it was a part of the

times as assassinations took place, civil unrest

and large-scale protests to the war in Vietnam

filled headlines and airwaves. The rock music we

all listened to mirrored these troubled times and

made us question those in control. The first

Velvet Underground record ('VU & Nico') would

become my favorite and is rings true today,

embodying the dark,the light and the sad humor of

its time. I recall getting a copy of Lou Reed's

"Walk on the Wild Side" as a single when I was at

college and it became another favorite of mine. I

bought many Lou Reed albums through the years and

found something worthy on each one. I was a fan

and watched Lou evolve through a series of looks

and personas. I read about 'Metal Machine Music'

(Lou's instrumental/feedback opus) when it came

out and almost believed all of the critics who

put it down. It seemed to be universally

misunderstood. When I finally got a chance to

hear it in its entirety on CD many years later, I

realized just how great it was. It still stands

up today and went on the be performed by a modern

classical ensemble (Zeitkratzer) with Lou

performing as well. A special moment for me was

when Lou first played on stage with with fellow

NY icon John Zorn at a Knitting Factory Memorial

concert at Town Hall nearly a decade ago. Lou and

John ended up being good friends and worked

together on a number of live dates. I felt

fortunate to have been at The Stone for both sets

with Lou, John and Laurie Anderson, especially

considering that The Stone holds only 75 seats.

Lou Reed passed away on October 27, after

undergoing a liver transplant in May of this

year. He was 71 at the time of his death. Here is

a short list of my favorite recordings of Lou's:

 

1.Velvet Underground - All four of their studio

albums are essential and show them to be in a

class of their own. There are a number of live

recordings available, many of which are poorly

recorded but still worthy of checking out.

 

2.'Transformer' (1972) produced by David Bowie &

Mick Ronson. Includes hit single, "Walk on the

Wild Side'. Lou's first big selling album. A gem.

 

3.'Metal Machine Music' (1975) released on RCA

Red Seal, their classical label. A double album

filled with layers of feedback guitar, all played

and manipulated by Mr. Reed. Universally

misunderstood and often considered a joke at the

time. Lou's masterwork.

 

4.'Street Hassle' (1978) First binaural recording. The title track is a long,

three-part suite tone poem about New York. One of Lou's more serious works.

 

5.Lou Reed Band - Live in Italy (1983) 2 LP Set

with perhaps Lou's best live band: Robert Quine

on guitar, Fernando Saunders on bass and Fred

Maher on drums. The late Robert Quine (a founding

member of the Voidoids) was a longtime Velvet

Underground fanatic and a perfect match for Lou

in this quartet. This version of Lou's band

recorded a couple of fine studio albums: 'Blue

Mask' & 'Legendary Hearts'. This double live set

captures them at their best!

 

6.'New York' (1989) A concept record? Lyrically,

this is one of Lou's finest moments and captures

the crumbling spirit of New York City perfectly.

More than any newspaper or magazine, this record

reminds me of why I have had a longtime love/hate

relationship with NYC.

 

Long Live Lou Reed, a quintessential New York
